Tunibamba llakta
The Tunibamba Commune is an ancestral indigenous community, part of the Otavalo people and the Kichwa nationality.
It is located in the El Sagrario parish of the Cotacachi canton, Imbabura province, and was recognized by the Ecuadorian state in 1937. Tunibamba is known for its privileged landscape, with agricultural plots and views of the Imbabura Volcano. In 2014, the Tunibamba commune introduced divisions that affected the communal nature of the land, leading the Constitutional Court to define guarantees to protect collective rights over community lands. The commune is also known for its brick kiln production, which contributes to the local economy. Many working and abandoned kilns can be seen dotted around the community.
